ATLANTA – After completing the first round of doubles, rain pushed Friday’s entire first round of singles indoors on the first day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

All eight seeded doubles teams moved on to the second round of play. In the most closely contested match of the day, Amy Sergeant and Noemie Scharle of Florida State defeated Georgia Southern’s Ali Beavers and Melanie Rolle, 9-8 (7) to earn a spot in Saturday’s Round of 16.

In singles, Georgia Tech junior Sasha Krupina upended eighth-seeded Irene Rehberger of South Florida, 6-3, 6-4. Rehberger was the only seeded player to fall on the first day of competition.

Lynn Blau and Viet Ha Ngo of the host Yellow Jackets also earned straight-set singles wins on Friday. In doubles, Blau teamed with Hillary Davis to earn an 8-4 win over Jenny Frisell and Allison Hodges of Central Florida.

“We went in the match with the mindset of competing out there,” said Blau of her doubles win. “We have been working a lot on doubles lately and we wanted to execute the plays we have been working on and just play solid out on the court.

“I wanted to play very consistent in singles. I did not want to give my opponent any chance to get into the match. I felt I was physically and mentally very strong on the court.”

The tournament will continue Saturday at 8 a.m., with the second round of doubles. Singles play will begin not before 9 a.m.
