The No. 32 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team fell by a 5-2 score to No. 11 Virginia Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-8, 0-6 Atlantic Coast Conference while the Cavaliers improve to 15-5, 5-0 ACC.
The match began with the Cavaliers claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions. The No. 3 team of Nick Meythaler and Stephen Rozak posted an 8-5 win over Jordan Delass and George Gvelesiani. Virginia then captured the point with as the pair of Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart recorded an 8-6 victory at No. 2 over Tech’s Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath. The Jackets then posted a win at No. 1 doubles as the team of Marko Rajevac and David North upset No. 18 Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, 9-8 (5).
Virginia built its lead to 2-0 when Meythaler defeated Blackmon at No. 6 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The lead was then 3-0 once Rajevac fell to No. 9 Devvarman at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 3-6. Tech made the score 3-1 when Rath came from behind to upset No. 45 Huey, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. The Jackets then narrowed the gap to 3-2 as North held on to win at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-4 over Mikklo. Virginia then clinched the match when Gvelesiani fell at No. 5 singles to Cohen, 3-6, 6-2, 3-6. In the final match of the day, Delass dropped a three-set match at No. 2 singles to No. 77 Stewart, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday when they host No. 49 Virginia Tech at 12 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
