No. 25 Softball Heads To Georgia State Wednesday

Feb. 28, 2012

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech softball team will return to action with a midweek game at Georgia State on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 5 p.m. The game will be held in Panthersville, Ga.

This is Tech’s seventh game to be held on leap year, in the 26 year history of the team. The Jackets hold a record of 3-3 on the extra day.

This is the 61st meeting between the two teams, and the 14th under the direction of Sharon Perkins. Tech holds the series lead 41-19 while Perkins has a 12-1 lead of her own, the only loss coming on Feb. 9, 2008 at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic in Panthersville.

Georgia State is currently 11-4 on the season and 6-2 at home. The Panthers have hosted two tournaments this season, the aforementioned First Pitch Classic as well as the Panther Invitational. They also participated in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Classic in Woodstock last weekend, combining for a 10-2 record in tournament play. Georgia State also split a doubleheader at Georgia Southern and dropped a 9-1 decision to Auburn at home last Wednesday.

The Panthers are currently led by Audrey Mason who has a .333 batting average in 2012 with 12 hits including three doubles, a triple and a homer for seven RBIs. She has also walked seven times on the year.

McCall Langford currently boasts a 4-2 record on the mound with a 2.21 ERA in eight appearances for the Panthers. She has allowed 26 hits, and has recorded 26 strikeouts on the year allowing just 10 runs, all earned.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off of a tough weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic where they went 1-4 dropping decisions to DePaul (the Classic champions), No. 9 Tennessee, UMass, and Mississippi State. However, Tech bounced back with a 6-0 victory over Illinois State on Sunday to snap its five-game losing streak.

Freshman Kylie Kleinshmidt threw a one-hitter for the Jackets against UMass on Saturday in her first career start. The rookie had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning, but it was broken up by a bloop single to left field with one out. Kleinschmidt netted nine strikeouts on the day, a career best, and the highest of any Tech pitcher this season in the 1-0 loss.
