No. 13 Yellow Jackets Drop 4-1 Decision To No. 9 Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 13 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (4-3) dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision to No. 9 Virginia (6-1) in the consolation bracket of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Saturday night at the Boar’s Head Club in Charlottesville, Va.

The Yellow Jackets lost the doubles point for the first times this season as the Cavaliers earned wins on courts one and two.

The Wahoos’ top team of Emily Fraser and Li Xi downed Tech’s pair of Jillian O’Neill and Alex Anghelescu 8-3 to earn an early edge. Virginia claimed the first point of the day with an 8-5 win by Erin Vierra and Hana Tomljanovic over the Yellow Jackets’ side of Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn on court two. It was the first loss of the season by Blau and Kilborn.

Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win by 85th-ranked Tomljanovic over Jasmine Minor on court four. O’Neill, ranked No. 45, earned another ranked win with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over 29th-ranked Emily Fraser on court one to make the team score 2-1.

The Cavaliers inched closer to the team victory when Xi downed Viet Ha Ngo 7-6(2), 6-4 on court three. UVA clinched the team win as 30th-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh downed Tech’s Kilborn in a three-set battle, 6-0, 6-7(6), 6-4, on court two.

The Yellow Jackets will conclude play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships against eighth-ranked North Carolina (5-4) at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Boar’s Head Club in Charlottesville. After racing out to a 3-0 lead Saturday, the Tar Heels lost 4-3 to No. 5 Baylor.
