Men's Tennis Picks Up Nine Wins On Day One Of Southern Intercollegiate

Sept. 19, 2008

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team collected eight singles wins and one doubles win on the opening day of competition Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

“Overall I am pleased with our performances today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “For our first tournament of the season we are definitely ready, but we have to tighten things up mentally for tomorrow’s matches.”

Newcomers Kevin King and Dusan Miljevic were terrific in their collegiate-debuts, as King defeated Wofford’s Stuart Robertson, 6-3, 6-3, and Miljevic downed Wofford’s Paul Bartholomy, 7-5, 6-3, both in straight-sets.

“It was important for Kevin [King] and Dusan [Miljevic] to get one under their belt,” Thorne said. “It will be a lot harder for them tomorrow, but they did a great job getting their first collegiate wins today.”

Sophomores Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith also picked up wins for the Yellow Jackets, as Gomez easily dispatched Duke’s Jared Pinsky in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2, and Smith went on to post a lengthy 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(2) win over Duke’s Dylan Arnould.

Tech sophomores Miguel Muguruza and Doug Kenny, and junior Austin Roebuck all moved onto the next round as well, posting straight-set victories.

Sophomore Eliot Potvin won in the round of 128, but fell Georgia’s Jamie Hunt, 7-6(5), 6-2, in the round of 64.

In doubles action, King and Gomez defeated Virginia Tech’s Degado De Robles-Corace, 8-3.

Competition heats up tomorrow as play begins at 9:30 a.m. in the singles round of 32 and 5:30 p.m. in the doubles round of 16.
