McDowell Moves on at NCAA Singles Championships

ATLANTA – Amanda McDowell, the No. 7 seed in the 2008 NCAA Singles Championships, has advanced to the third round following a three-set victory over South Carolina’s Gira Schofield Thursday morning.

The Yellow Jacket sophomore is Tech’s lone remaining competitor in the tournament that opened Wednesday. Six-time All-American Kristi Miller lost her second round match against Cal’s Claire Ilcinkas, 6-7, 6-0, 4-6, to end her successful singles career at Georgia Tech with a 151-39 record over the last four years. The Yellow Jacket standout owns the Tech career records in singles wins and winning percentage.

Miller and fellow senior Whitney McCray also saw their final NCAA Doubles Championships run come to an end in the first round of action Thursday, falling to TCU’s tandem of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
