ATLANTA – Guillermo Gomez, Kevin King and Dean O’Brien scored straight-set wins in singles, and Georgia Tech got the doubles point from the bottom of its lineup Sunday as the 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated No. 39 Wake Forest, 6-1, in Atlantic Coast Conference tennis at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
Tech, which lost only one individual match in getting two victories this weekend, improved to 3-1 in the ACC and 12-2 overall, while the Demon Deacons fell to 1-3 in conference play, 7-7 overall. Tech is on the road for its next three matches, first at Clemson at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by a weekend trip to Boston College and Maryland.
“Our last two matches on the court were extremely important,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “The fourth point for the team is huge, but if you’re on the court and playing the match, you’ve got to want it. We did a good job of that this weekend.
“We appreciate our friend Nolan Blake coming out today and staying the whole match in the chilly weather. I’m very happy we were able to win the match for him.”
Tech dedicated Sunday’s match to Blake, an 8-year-old cancer patient whom the Yellow Jackets adopted last year through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
The Jackets captured the doubles point despite dropping the No. 1 match. Eliot Potvin and Ryan Smith easily defeated Jonathan Wolff and Danny Kreyman, 8-3, at No. 2, while Gomez and O’Brien got by Zach Leslie and Tripper Carleton, 8-6, at No. 3. Juan Spir and King, ranked 11th nationally, lost 8-7 in a tiebreaker to Iain Atkinson and Danny Hopkins at No. 3.
Gomez, Tech’s senior All-American, quickly disposed of the 88th-ranked Carleton at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, for Tech’s second point. After the Demon Deacons got on the board with 70th-ranked Wolff’s 6-3, 6-3 win over Spir at No. 2, O’Brien restored the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Leslie at No. 6.
King worked hard for a 7-6, 7-5 win over Iain Atkinson at No. 3, earning the deciding point for the Yellow Jackets.
Potvin and Magin Ortiga completed the victory for Tech with three-set wins at No. 4 and 5. Potvin came back from a 5-3 deficit in the third set to defeat Danny Krayman, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, while Ortiga overcame a first-set loss to get past David Hopkins, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
