Jackets Come From Behind To Defeat Georgia State, 9-4

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. – Sophomore Whitney Humphreys (4-0) worked 6.2 scoreless innings in relief to remain perfect this season and junior Caitlin Lever finished 4-for-4, with two runs batted run, to lead Georgia Tech (6-3) past Georgia State (3-6), 9-4, in the championship game of the Lady Panther Invitational on Sunday night at Bob Heck Field. The Yellow Jackets won their third consecutive Lady Panther Invitational title.

The win over Georgia State was the 11th straight victory for the Jackets over their in-state foe.

Freshman Whitney Haller went 2-for-3, with three RBIs and sophomore Aileen Morales finished 2-for-3, with three runs scored and two stolen bases (5-for-5). Senior Amy Hosier drove in two runs for the Jackets.

The Lady Panthers jumped out in front of the Yellow Jackets by a count of 4-0 in the top of the first inning. GSU’s Jamie Cagle drove in two runs and Nichule Griffin singled in a run for the Lady Panthers. The Jackets answered with two runs of their own as Haller doubled off the center field fence to drive in the second run as Tech trailed 4-2 after one inning of play.

Humphreys pitcher her way out of a jam in the bottom of the second inning after surrendering two base hits, she slammed the door shut with two fly outs and a strikeout to keep Tech within reach, 4-2.

Junior Christine Sheridan and sophomore Savannah Brown drove in runs for Tech in the bottom half of the fifth inning to tie the score at 4-4. Haller followed with a base hit up the middle to give Tech its first lead of the game, 5-4.

After two walks with the bases loaded, senior Amy Hosier drove one off the center field fence to plate two more runs for Tech as the lead went to five, 9-4.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Columbus, Ga., for the NFCA Leadoff Classic Friday-Sunday, Feb. 24-26. Tech will take on No. 6 Alabama and Hofstra and Friday, and face top-ranked Michigan on Saturday to complete pool play.

NOTES: Brown on a six-game hitting streak…Haller on four-game hitting streak.
