THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team opened up the 2014 fall season with three doubles wins and three singles victories on the first day of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

The Yellow Jackets started off the day by sweeping fellow-ACC opponent N.C. State in doubles. The duo of sophomore Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and freshman Alexis Prokopuik rolled to a, 6-0, win on court three. Junior Natasha Prokhnevska and freshman Johnnise Renaud paired up to defeat Joanna Nalborska and Elisah Hande, 6-1, on court two.

Sophomore Rasheeda McAdoo and Paige Hourigan battled for a, 6-4, victory on court one against Liza Fieldsend and Sophie Nelson to complete the sweep.

The Yellow Jackets then faced off against LSU in singles play. Renaud kicked off her career as a Yellow Jacket with a victory, defeating #61 Joana Vale Costa, 7-5, 6-1, at the number one spot. #118 Prokhnevska was solid on court four, capturing a, 6-3, 6-4, win against Ella Taylor.

On court two, Hourigan faced Noel Scott. After Hourigan won set one, 6-1, Scott came back to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Prokopuik won her first set against Skylar Kuykendall, 6-4, but fell in consecutive sets, 6-1, 6-1, on court five.

It was a battle at the number three spot between McAdoo and Abby Owens. McAdoo edged Owens, 7-6 (7-5) in set one before taking set two, 7-5.

After falling in her first set to Skylar Holloway, 6-2, Anton-Ohlmeyer won set two, 7-6, on court six. Holloway then captured set three, 6-4. Freshman Vooha Vellanki fell in her first set to Madasa Straume, 6-1, before the match was retired.

Doubles action tomorrow begins at 10 a.m. at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. Georgia Tech will face Georgia State in doubles and N.C. State in singles tomorrow.
