Countdown to First Pitch: 11 Days (Thomas Nichols Blog)

Feb. 8, 2010

The Georgia Tech baseball team begins the 2010 season Friday, Feb. 19 when it opens a three-game series with Missouri State. With preseason practice underway, fans can check out RamblinWreck.com to find blogs, video interviews and Q&A’s by members of the 2010 squad about their lives as college students, what’s going on in practice, and their excitement about the upcoming season in the countdown to first pitch series.

Today’s blog is with junior Infielder/pitcher Thomas Nichols.

Since we have the day off from practice today, I am going to tell you a little about our practice yesterday…..

“Sunday was another very successful day of live intra-squad action at Russ Chandler stadium. The main focus is to create real situations that we as players will face on a daily basis once February 19th rolls around.

As a team we feel like we have really made strides to get our pitching staff assigned to roles, and hitters locked-in to face the best pitching in the country. Team chemistry is better than it has ever been according to my own perspective and we plan to build off this throughout the season.

Sunday afternoon was a beautiful day for baseball in downtown Atlanta, and you better believe we were hitting it hard to take advantage of each practice. Mark Pope and Jed Bradley took the mound in one of their last chances to show their stuff before the season kicks off.

Each scattered a few hits but had an overall impressive performance as usual. However, I’m almost certain they are sick and tired of facing teammates. It only takes a few times to figure what a pitcher wants to do for those of you that don’t realize what I’m saying. Then relievers like the crafty veteran Andrew Robinson and Kevin Jacob came in and had dominant stuff like usual. So basically, what I’m saying is our pitching is top notch, including the UNHITABLE 85 mph fastball of Cake (Jake) Davies. He will be a huge asset of the Georgia Tech bullpen in the upcoming season as well.

Everybody seems to be focused and prepared to do what needs to be done in order to reach that overall goal. OMAHA THAT IS. Come check us out! GO JACKETS!!!”
