THE FLATS – Charles Mitchell, a 6-8 forward who played his first two seasons at Maryland, will be able to play for the Yellow Jackets in 2014-15 after having his immediate eligibility waiver approved by the NCAA.
Mitchell, who is from Marietta, Ga., and attended Wheeler High School, will have two seasons of eligibility at Tech. He averaged 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds over 70 games, including 17 starts, in two seasons at Maryland. Last season, he averaged 6.5 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds over 32 games, and started the final 10 games for the Terps.
“We are thankful that the NCAA has supported and granted Charles’ waiver for immediate eligibility,” said head coach Brian Gregory. “Coming back home to Atlanta will give him the opportunity to assist his family while achieving some tremendous academic and athletic goals.”
Mitchell is one of four players to transfer into the Tech program this year, joining post players Demarco Cox, a 6-8 senior forward from Mississippi, Josh Heath, a 6-2 sophomore guard from South Florida, and Nick Jacobs, a 6-8 senior forward from Alabama. Cox and Heath are eligible to play this season for the Jackets, as is 6-8 senior forward Robert Sampson, who sat out last season after transferring from East Carolina.
Gregory also has three new scholarship freshmen in 6-2 guard Tadric Jackson from Tifton, Ga., 6-9 forward Abdoulaye Gueye from Dakar, Senegal by way of Birmingham, Ala., and 6-10 center Ben Lammers from San Antonio, Texas. The Yellow Jackets return two starters and five scholarship letterwinners from the 2013-14 squad.
