THE FLATS – Beginning a stretch of four road games in its next five, Georgia Tech visits Boston College for a nationally televised game at 9 p.m. Tuesday night at the Silvio O. Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
ESPNU will provide national television coverage of the game. Radio coverage of the game will be provided by the Georgia Tech IMG Sports Network and can be heard in Atlanta on WYAY-FM (106.7). The Boston College radio broadcast can be heard nationally on satellite radio (Sirius ch. 85, XM ch. 85).
Tech (10-8, 1-4 ACC) just finished a 1-2 homestand with a 56-42 loss to Miami. The Yellow Jackets are 0-2 on the road in the ACC, having lost at Maryland and Duke to open the league slate in early January.
In its third season under head coach Brian Gregory, Tech has played its last two games with just eight scholarship players and without two-year starting forward Robert Carter, Jr. In spite of that, the Yellow Jackets had played well offensively, averaging more than 70 points a game for the season, until being held to a season-low 42 by Miami. Defensively, Tech ranks 85th nationally in scoring yield (67.1 ppg) and 44th in field goal percentage defense (41.0 pct.).
Boston College (5-13, 1-4 ACC) has lost six of its last seven games, including an 82-71 loss to North Carolina Saturday. The Eagles, who are 3-4 at home this season, defeated Virginia Tech, 62-59, in Blacksburg on Jan. 11 for their only ACC win to date.
Tech follows Tuesday night’s game with a visit to NC State Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home to face North Carolina Jan. 29.
Fast Break Points
• Georgia Tech is appearing on the ESPNU Tuesday night ACC game for the third straight week.
• Boston College has won the last three meetings against Georgia Tech, including last year’s game at the Conte Forum and the first-round game in the ACC Tournanent. those were the last two games of the 2012-13 season for the Yellow Jackets.
• In the ACC Tournament, Tech broke out to a 15-0 lead and wound up on the short end of an 84-64 score. Marcus Georges-Hunt finished the season by scoring a career-igh 21 points with 11 rebounds in that game.
• Tech has played its last two games with just eight scholarship players, competing without four members of the team who had combined for 22 starts and were key parts of the rotation at the start of pre-season practice – forward Robert Carter, Jr., swingman Jason Morris, and guards Travis Jorgenson and Solomon Poole.
• The absence of Carter, Jr., has hurt Tech in several ways, most notably on the glass, where the Yellow Jackets have been beaten on the boards three times in the five games the ACC’s leading rebounder has missed. Tech had won the rebound battle against its first 14 opponents this season.
Series Notes vs. Boston College
• Boston College won both meetings between the two teams in 2012-13, a 74-72 decision in Chestnut Hill in the final regular-season game, and an 84-64 rout in the opening round of the ACC Tournament in Greensboro.
• The BC win in Greensboro was the first-ever meeting between the two teams in the ACC Tournament.
• The Eagles have won the last three meetings, and six of the last eight, but Tech still leads the overall series, 9-8.
• BC has won seven of the 12 meetings with Tech since the Eagles joined the ACC.
• Thirteen of the games in the short series have been decided by less than 10 points, 10 of them by four points or less, and two in overtime.
• The four meetings in Boston have been played at three different venues. The Jan. 29, 2005 game was Tech’s first visit to the Conte Forum, BC’s current home court. The first game in the series on Dec. 31, 1946, was played at Boston Arena, and the teams also played in the Boston Garden on Jan. 19, 1980.
• Prior to BC’s entry into the ACC, the teams met four times on neutral floors, including one outside the United States, a 65-62 overtime win for the Yellow Jackets in the 1986 Suntory Ball in Tokyo, Japan.
• The teams have met twice in NCAA Tournament competition, both of them won by Tech. The Yellow Jackets downed the Eagles, 103-89, in the 1996 Southeast Regional second round in Orlando, and eliminated the Eagles two seasons ago, 57-54 in the second round in Milwaukee.
