THE FLATS – Charles Mitchell and Tadric Jackson led five players in double-figure scoring for Georgia Tech Friday night at the Yellow Jackets defeated Clayton State, 74-41, in an exhibition game at McCamish Pavilion.

Head coach Brian Gregory played all 12 of Tech’s eligible scholarship players, and 10 of them scored as the Yellow Jackets broke open a close game in the final eight minutes of the first half. Marcus Georges-Hunt scored 11 points, while post players Demarco Cox and Ben Lammers chipped in with 10 apiece.

With Tech leading 17-16 coming out of the third media timeout of the first half, Mitchell scored inside on each of the Yellow Jackets’ next three possessions to fuel a 24-8 run. Jackson punctuated the run by pouring in all three of his three-point baskets, the third coming just seconds before the halftime buzzer to give Tech a 41-24 advantage.

“A couple of things that we have continued to do well is rebound the basketball, which is a positive for us,” said Gregory, who opens his fourth season with the Yellow Jackets next Friday, Nov. 14, against Georgia at McCamish Pavilion. “And other than the free throw line, we shot the ball pretty well. We are moving the ball a little better. There were times today where it was not as good as it has been so we need to continue to work on that. But we have a lot of different guys that can do some different things and can get it going. I was pleased.”

Tech used its size advantage to outrebound the Lakers, 53-28, and score 50 points in the paint. Georges-Hunt and Mitchell led the way with seven rebounds apiece, and eight players had four or more. The Yellow Jackets shot 50.8 percent from the floor, hitting 3-of-11 from three-point range, while holding Clayton State to 24.6 percent and 3-of-22 from behind the three-point arc.

Point guards Travis Jorgenson, Josh Heath and Corey Heyward combined for 10 assists and just three turnovers in the game.
