Schenk Lifts Tech Women's Tennis Past Iowa, 5-2

ATLANTA — A win at No. 4 singles by freshman Annelies Schenk allowed to the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to hold off a late rally a defeat Iowa by a 5-2 score on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.

The 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets (3-1) got off to a quick start against the Hawkeyes (0-3) as they won the first five matches of the day, including a sweep of doubles action. Tech’s tandem of Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson defeated Iowa’s team of Cassie Haas and Denitza Alexandrova by an 8-2 score at No. 1, while the Jackets’ team of Sekita Grant and Lyndsay Shosho were 8-6 victors over Jennifer Hodgman and Chelsea Glynn at No. 3. The team of Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto completed the sweep for the Yellow Jackets, defeating Steffi Hoch and Gloria Okino by an 8-5 count.

Anderson and Gunn then upped the Tech advantage to 3-0 in the match win their wins at No. 3 and No. 2 singles respectively. Anderson ran her record to a perfect 4-0 on the year with a straight-set victory over Alexandrova. The rookie won the first set by a 6-3 score, before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second frame. Gunn was also a straight-set winner over Hoch, as she won the first set 6-2, but needed a 7-3 win in a tiebreaker to claim the second set, 7-6.

Iowa then closed the margin to 3-2 in the match with wins at both No. 1 and No. 6 singles, before Schenk closed the match out by rallying for a three-set win. After dropping the first set by a 6-4 score to Okino, Schenk rallied to win the second set by a 6-2 score and then the third frame by a 6-3 count. Fellow freshman Shosho was the Jackets’ final singles winner of the day, as she downed Glynn in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Georgia Tech will return to action next weekend when it heads on the road to face both eighth-ranked Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State. The Jackets will face the Commodores on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. and the square off with the Blue Raiders on Feb. 16, also at 11 a.m.
