ATLANTA – Behind 15 kills by Monique Mead, the Georgia Tech Volleyball team (10-7, 3-4 ACC) swept Boston College (6-12, 2-5) to earn their 10th victory of the season, their ninth-straight victory over Boston College, and remained perfect in O’Keefe Gymnasium against the Eagles.
“It was nice to see the team come out and play hard today and get back-to-back wins this weekend,” said Head Coach Tonya Johnson. “They really played some consistent volleyball. Today as a team we really served well and that helped keep Boston College out of system. I am proud of their efforts this weekend and we need to keep working to keep going at this pace.”
Mead kept her streak alive earning double-digit kills in every game this season with a .364 hitting percentage, also racking on two blocks, three digs and a service ace. Kaleigh Colson was next on the team in kills, with seven, using perfect timing to throw off the Boston College blockers. In addition, Colson recorded 22 assists in the match as well as three service aces.
Courtney Castle and Mollie Kolosky led the way for Boston College with eight kills, as Castle also netted 11 digs on the day.
The Yellow Jackets came out of the gates blazing in the first set and easily defeated Boston College 25-12, never falling behind. Mead led the way for Tech with seven kills in nine attempts while Colson tallied two of the Jackets five service aces in the set. The Jackets were nearly perfect in attack mode making just one attack error during the set.
The second set provided more competition for the Tech as the Eagles got out to an early lead, but the Jackets battled back thanks to an additional six kills by Mead, four nifty attacks by Colson and three slams by Alexis Woodson. The defense of Quinn Evans at the net thwarted some Boston College rallies as she netted two blocks and a kill in set number two to help the Tech to a 25-21 victory and a 2-0 match lead.
Set three was the closest of the night for the Jackets. Though they had some early trouble with the Eagle attack, Tech rallied back to control the end of the game and earn the 3-0 victory. The seventh time in the last nine wins that the Jackets have swept Boston College.
Tech will head out for a five-game road trip that will take them down south to face off with Florida State and Miami.
“This is going to be a tough stretch for us,” continued Johnson. “We need to focus and rally as a team to continue to get better.”
The team will take on the Seminoles Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by a Sunday matinee in Coral Gables against the Hurricanes at 1 p.m.
