Jackets Down Georgia Southern for Second Straight Shutout

ATLANTA (Feb. 25) — Georgia Tech freshman Jaime Wong downed Georgia Southern’s Jennifer Runnion at No. 4 singles to clinch the 49th-ranked Yellow Jackets’ 9-0 victory against the Eagles in women’s collegiate tennis action Friday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Wong topped Runnion, 6-1, 6-1, as the Jackets (4-1) swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches in recording their second consecutive shutout. Tech downed Georgia State, 9-0, in its last outing a week ago.

Tech won all six singles matches in straight sets and surrendered just two points in three doubles matches against the Eagles (0-4).

“I thought from the start of the match until the end of the match we played good tennis,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “I was pleased with how we played in both singles and doubles. We looked like a polished team out there today.”

Senior Sabrina Pardo and junior Bobbi Guthrie posted singles victories for the Jackets at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions, respectively, then teamed together to win at No. 1 doubles.

Pardo topped Georgia Southern’s Isabella Kling, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1, and Guthrie downed Martha Barrett, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. In doubles, Pardo and Guthrie defeated Kling and Brooke McNamee, 8-0.

Freshmen Mysti Morris and Charlotte Pernet, and sophomore Laura Ozolins also posted singles wins for the Jackets. Tech’s doubles tandems of Morris and Wong, and Ozolins and Pernet also were victorious.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, hosting Pennsylvania at 11 a.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
