THE FLATS – Georgia Tech Senior Associate Athletic Director Ryan Bamford has been named Director of Athletics at the University of Massachusetts, announced Monday by school officials. He becomes the seventh AD in UMass history.
Bamford’s formal introductory press conference will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. on the UMass Amherst campus.
“I couldn’t be more pleased for Ryan as he moves on to an exciting opportunity at UMass,” Georgia Tech AD Mike Bobinski said. “During his four years at Georgia Tech, Ryan has had extensive responsibility and a significant impact across our entire department and is very well prepared to take this next step in his career.
“On behalf of Georgia Tech Athletics, I thank Ryan for his contributions and accomplishments here on The Flats and wish him great success in the years ahead.”
Bamford spent four years at Georgia Tech, first serving as Associate AD before being promoted to Senior Associate AD in June 2013. From August 2013-September 2014, Bamford served in a dual capacity, overseeing both internal and external operations. The New Hampshire native was responsible for the Athletic Association’s operational aspects for football, baseball, and men’s basketball. He also oversaw sports medicine, player performance, facilities, equipment, and game operations.
Prior to joining the Georgia Tech staff in 2011, Bamford spent eight-plus years at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. As Yale’s Senior Associate AD, he was the sports supervisor for the Bulldogs football, men’s basketball, and men’s and women’s fencing programs. In addition to coordinating internal operations for the athletic department, he was also responsible for overseeing Yale’s event management team, equipment operations, sports medicine, and strength and conditioning.
Bamford has served on a number of NCAA and Ivy League committees, including four years on the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee, which he chaired in 2009 and 2010.
He began his college administration career at Springfield (Mass.) College. He has also served at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Octagon Sports Marketing, Plymouth State University, and the University of New Hampshire.
A 2000 graduate of Ithaca (N.Y.) College, Bamford was a standout basketball player for the Bombers. He left Ithaca as the school’s single-season and career leader in 3-point field goals, while finishing 13th on the career scoring list.
