Coach Hall on Matt Grimes
[quote]He[apos]s a major talent. He had an unfortunate injury that cost him really two years in our program. We saw some good flashes this fall and we hope he can get back to the form he was at when he was a freshman.[quote]

2013
Did not pitch in 2013 due to an arm injury suffered the previous season and earned a medical redshirt.

2012
Missed the last half of the season with an arm injury… Made five starts before the injury and was 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA… Struck out 17 in 18.2 innings… Was brilliant in getting Tech its first win, firing seven shutout innings and allowing just one hit with seven Ks in the 5-0 win at Winthrop (2/17) – it was Tech[apos]s first combined one-hitter since 1994 after Zane Evans pitched the final two hit-less innings… His start against Ohio State was the shortest of his career, going just two innings with three runs (one earned) and five walks (2/25)… Went six innings with six strikeouts, allowing four hits and two runs to pick up a win over Rutgers (3/3)… Started versus Wagner (3/13) and worked a 1-2-3 first inning and was credited with the win on a predetermined staff day… His final appearance of the season was a start versus Virginia Tech (3/17) and worked 2.2 innings with four runs and absorbed the loss.

2011
Made 15 appearances with 12 starts during his rookie campaign on the Flats… Was the Jackets[apos] weekday starter and finished 7-4 with a 4.15 ERA… Fanned 77 against 34 walks in 73.2 innings… Made all three starts against rival Georgia, going 2-1 versus the Bulldogs with 19 strikeouts and three walks in 16.1 innings… His April 12th start against UGA at Chandler Stadium was the longest of his career, as he went 6.2 innings with two runs, a career best 10 strikeouts and no walks in the 5-3 win… Worked two innings of no-hit ball and was the winning pitcher in a wild, 15-inning 6-5 win over NC State in the ACC Tournament… Scattered five hits with six punchouts in six innings to post an 11-3 win at Savannah State on May 10… Recorded eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings of relief in the NCAA Regional opener versus Austin Peay but was hung the tough-luck loss in a 2-1 game.

High School
Played four years, including winning three letters, at Mill Creek High School under head coach Doug Jones… Named Gwinnett County Pitcher of the Year following 2010 senior campaign… One of just four pitchers in Gwinnett County history to have 100 strikeouts in a single season… Posted a 1.32 ERA his senior year for the Hawks… Also played two seasons, winning one letter, as a center on the Mill Creek basketball team under head coach Phil Bollier.

Personal
Full name is Matthew Damon Grimes… Born Sept. 4, 1991 in Snellville, GA… Son of Damon and Maryanne Grimes… Has an older sister, Brittany, that attended Georgia Tech… Father Damon played basketball for Western Kentucky… Majoring in Management.
