Jackets Send Four to Finals in Opening Session of ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by three of the top eight qualifiers in the 500-yard freestyle, the Georgia Tech men’s swimming and diving enjoyed a strong opening session Thursday at the 2003 ACC Championships at North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium. Tonight’s finals begin at 7 p.m.

Senior All-American Shilo Ayalon qualified second in the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:21.83, while freshman Sam Morgan stands fifth (4:26.16) and sophomore Matt Figh (4:28.21) eighth. Both times were lifetime bests. All three will swim in tonight’s final, while junior Eduardo Oliver placed 12th in a lifetime best 4:29.58 and moves on to tonight’s consolation final.

Freshman Yonatan Cohen also advances to tonight’s finals in the 200 individual medley. He qualified eighth with a lifetime-best swim of 1:50.36.

Additionally, senior Josh Hersko eclipsed his own school record with a lifetime-best swim of 20.58 in the 50 free. He finished ninth and will swim in tonight’s consolation final.

In addition to the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free, finals in the 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and one-meter diving will be contested Thursday evening. The top 16 finishers in each event score points.
