THE FLATS – Junior Kyle McCann launched two home runs, including a grand slam, to give him seven RBI in Georgia Tech’s 12-1 victory over Northwestern in game on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets’ (6-3) catcher finished with three extra-base hits and seven RBI on the night, while holding the Wildcats (3-5) to just four hits overall.

Despite a shaky start that forced nearly 50 pitches through three innings, junior Xzavion Curry (1-0) found his rhythm and tossed five scoreless innings, fanning seven, while retiring 10-straight batters to finish his start. Northwestern’s starter Hank Christie (1-1) went 3.2 innings allowing seven runs.

Tech took the lead with back-to-back one-run innings beginning in the second and never looked back. Their bats had a season-high 16 hits and, including McCann, were led by six Jackets with multi-hit days. Colin Hall also had three hits on the day with a double and an RBI, while Chase Murray, Michael Guldberg, Oscar Serratos and Nick Wilhite combined for eight hits.

Northwestern featured four players with hits on the day as Jack Dunn, Alex Erro, Michael Trautwein and Jack Kelly all reached base. The Wildcats’ bullpen went four pitchers deep in relief with the most effective being Matt Gannon, going 1.1 shutout innings and two strikeouts.

Tech gave their entire relief effort first appearances of the season. Jake Brace came in first to throw 2.0 shutout before Walker Barlow allowed the lone run. Robert Winborne closed the game with a scoreless ninth.

The Yellow Jackets conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with the second game beginning no earlier than 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
