Yellow Jackets Host Northwestern In ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will host the Northwestern Wildcats Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in the fourth annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Jackets have played in each of the three previous Challenges are just one of four ACC teams with a perfect record over the first three years. Tech has defeated Iowa, Michigan State and Penn State previously in the Challenge and this will mark the second time Tech has played host to the Challenge.

Northwestern enters the contest sporting a perfect 6-0 mark on the season after wins over St. Mary’s and BYU at the St. Mary’s Hilton-Concord Thanksgiving Classic. Senior center Amy Jaeschke was named tournament MVP after posting double-doubles in both contests. Jaeschke has tallied at least 20 points in four of NU’s six contests this season and has notched four double-doubles on the year, including a triple-double against Chicago State on Nov. 21 (30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks).

Tech and Northwestern have met on three previous occasions, with the Jackets holding a 2-1 record against the Wildcats.

Last Time Out vs. Northwestern…
Atlanta – Chioma Nnamaka scored 22 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 55-46 win over Northwestern Nov. 21 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Nnamaka scored in double-figures for the third time that season, knocking down six three-point shots to tie a career high. Freshman Alex Montgomery finished with a season-high 14 points and nine rebounds to help Tech stay unbeaten.

Tiffany Blackmon entered the game with 15:30 remaining in the second half and Tech leading by one. The sophomore sparked the Jackets with three points, five rebounds three blocks to help the team hold off the scrappy Wildcats.

Ellen Jaeschke led Northwestern with a career-high 24 points and 14 rebounds in a losing effort. The Wildcats shot only 2-of-16 from three-point range and coughed up 19 turnovers.

The Jackets held only a four-point lead going into the locker room after a first half plagued by missed shots and turnovers. Tech only shot 32 percent from the field and registered 12 turnovers.

LOOKING BACK
Last season at this point, Tech was 4-1 after defeating Long Island, 73-56, to claim the LIU Turkey Classic tournament title. Deja Foster was named MVP of the tournament.

TECH VERSUS THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE
Georgia Tech is 9-3 all-time against teams from the Big Ten Conference. The Wildcats are the only Big Ten foe the Jackets will see this season.

JACKETS IN THE ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE
This will mark the fourth annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge and Georgia Tech has played in each of the previous three and boasts a perfect 3-0 mark. The Jackets are one of four ACC teams which have not lost in the Challenge. The other three are Florida State, Maryland and Virginia. The only Big Ten team that has gone unblemished in the Challenge is Michigan.
