Yellow Jackets Host Nebraska In ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Nov. 29, 2011

Georgia Tech game notes

The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (4-2) will return to the Arena at Gwinnett Center when it hosts undefeated Nebraska (6-0) in the fifth annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Huskers will be playing their third game of a three-game road trip which included wins at Florida A&M and at Florida State. Nebraska is currently second in the AP Top 25 “others receiving votes” category and was also receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll released last Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets will try to bounce back from their first two losses of the season last Friday and Saturday in the San Juan Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tech dropped a 59-40 contest to No. 13/13 Rutgers Nov. 25 and a 67-62 overtime battle to RV/23 Green Bay Nov. 26.

Tech will also be trying to maintain its perfect record in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against Big Ten newcomer Nebraska. The Jackets are 4-0 in the Challenge and are one of only three teams between the two conferences to be unblemished (Maryland and Michigan are the other two).

Last Meeting Against Nebraska: Georgia Tech is 1-0 all-time against Nebraska with that win coming March 27, 1992, as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Cornhuskers 73-68 in the semifinals of the 1992 National Women’s Invitation Tournament, which the Jackets would go on to win with a 90-72 victory over Hawaii.
Interestingly enough, that tournament also marked the only time Tech has faced Green Bay and Nebraska, which also happened in consecutive games. Tech beat the Phoenix 78-77 in the first round of the tournament.

On This Date: Georgia Tech is 5-4 when playing on Nov. 30. The five wins: 68-56 vs. Tennessee Tech (11/30/08), 60-51 at Georgia State (11/30/05), 78-62 vs. Miami (Ohio) (11/30/02), 114-57 vs. Chattanooga (11/30/91) and 98-58 vs. USF (11/30/90).
The four losses: 80-70 vs. No. 6/6 NC State (11/30/02), 76-69 vs. Chattanooga (11/30/85), 79-49 at Alabama (11/30/83) and 97-78 at Georgia (11/30/79).

Tech Against The Big Ten: Georgia Tech owns a 10-4 (.714) record against teams that were members of the Big Ten at the time the game was played. The Yellow Jackets are 1-0 all-time against Nebraska, a 73-68 win en route to Tech’s title in the 1992 NWIT. The Huskers are the only Big Ten team Tech will play in the regular season this year.
Head Coach MaChelle Joseph is 7-2 against teams from the Big Ten.

Tech In The ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Georgia Tech is a perfect 4-0 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Jackets are one of only three teams between the two conferences. Maryland and Michigan are both 4-0 as well. The ACC has won all four previous challenges.
Tech has beaten Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa in the four previous ACC/Big Ten Challenges.

Streaming: All Georgia Tech home games this season not already scheduled to be on TV, will be available through a live stream in the Georgia Tech All-Access player on RamblinWreck.com.

Home Sweet Home: Georgia Tech owns a 98-27 (.784) home record under Joseph. This year, Tech is 3-0 at home. Last season, the Yellow Jackets went 14-3 in home contests and tied the school mark for home wins in season.

Gwinnett Power: In Tech’s first three home games, all played at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, the Jackets are averaging 92.7 ppg and are winning by an average of 44.7 ppg.

Seniors Seek Wins Record: The 2011-12 Georgia Tech senior class has a chance to set the school record for wins by a single class over its four year career. Each of the last three classes to graduate from Tech has set the record, which currently stands at 91 by the 2011 class of Alex Montgomery and Deja Foster. Currently, the 2012 class has 73 wins and would need 18 more to tie the mark of 91.
