ATLANTA – The 21st ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (6-4, 1-1 ACC) earned its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the 2011 season when they defeated the No. 11 Clemson Tigers (10-4, 0-1 ACC) 5-2 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on the Clemson University campus Wednesday afternoon.
Georgia Tech gained some early momentum by winning the doubles point and is now 6-0 this season after grabbing the early advantage.
In the top spot of the doubles lineup, Viet Ha Ngo and Jillian O’Neill earned an 8-6 come-from-behind win over Clemson’s Josipa Bek and Maria Belaya. The Yellow Jackets clinched the point with an 8-6 win from the No. 2 doubles pair of Sasha Krupina and Elizabeth Kilborn over the Tigers’ Laurianne Henry and Keri Wong.
Sophomore Elizabeth Kilborn earned the Jackets’ first singles win of the day, a 6-0, 5-7, 6-0 victory over the Tigers’ Laurianne Henry on court six. Lynn Blau dropped a tough 7-6, 6-3 decision to Clemson’s Caroline Magnusson on court five, but Jillian O’Neill extended Tech’s lead back to two, 3-1, with a 6-2, 7-6 win over CU’s Keri Wong at the number two spot of the lineup.
Josipa Bek earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over the Yellow Jackets’ Viet Ha Ngo on court one and drew the score to 3-2 in favor of Georgia Tech as the final two matches went to third sets.
In the first of the final two matches to finish, senior Sasha Krupina claimed a 6-2 third set victory to win the match 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 over Clemson’s Maria Belaya on court four, and clinch the dual win for Georgia Tech. Junior Caroline Lilley provided the final margin as she earned a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over Clemson’s Nelly Ciolkowski in the third spot of the lineup.
The Yellow Jackets will face another challenging test on Saturday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center when the No. 12 Miami Hurricanes make a visit to Atlanta for a noon match. Georgia Tech will be looking for its first home ACC win of the season against the Hurricanes. Admission is free and open to the public.
