Women’s Tennis Opens Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, MICH. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team kicked off the spring slate on Saturday in the first day of the Michigan Invitational. The Jackets picked up two singles matches and two doubles matches.

The three-day tournament features five teams ranked in the top 25 in the country: No. 7 Tech, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 10 Michigan, No. 13 Ohio State and No. 24 Arizona State. Each team plays one round of singles and one round of doubles each day.

Tech opened the first day facing Texas Tech in singles play. The Jackets secured wins from senior Paige Hourigan and freshman Ida Jarlskog. Hourigan, ranked No. 94 nationally, upset No. 5 Gabriela Talaba, 6-3, 7-6 (3). No. 89 Jarlskog also pocketed a triumph on Saturday, defeating No. 23 Felicity Maltby, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Doubles action followed singles play as the Jackets took on host Michigan and collected a pair of victories. Hourigan paired up with Victoria Flores to roll past Michigan’s Alex Najarian/Chiara Lommer, 6-3. Also capturing a doubles victory on the opening day was Tech’s duo of Johnnise Renaud/Jarlskog. The pair defeated Kate Fahey/Alyvia Jones in a tiebreatk, 7-6 (5).

On Sunday, Tech will face Arizona State/Ohio State in doubles followed by Michigan in singles action.
