THE FLATS

Elo Edeferioka and Cha’Ron Sweeney both posted double-figure scoring performances as the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team dominated Alabama State on Sunday in a 70-48 triumph. With the win, Tech moved to 2-0 on the season, while ASU dropped to 0-2.

“It was good to see Elo Edeferioka come out of, kind of what I call, a slump,” commented head coach MaChelle Joseph. “She had not really been herself. I thought today, she came out and did the things we saw her do all of last year in practice. I thought she did a great job rebounding the basketball, she was all over the floor and I thought she did a great job defensively. I thought she was very, very active today and I thought that was the difference for us in the game.”

How It Happened
Tech wasted no time jumping out with an early lead on Sunday as the Yellow Jackets claimed their first double-digit advantage with 2:41 remaining in the first quarter. Alabama State cut its deficit to single digits early to start the quarter as the squads traded baskets through the first five minutes until Tech’s Imani Tilford scored three-straight to hand GT a 29-18 edge with 3:58 to play in the half. Tech closed the half on a 9-3 run for a 35-21 halftime advantage.

Tech held the Hornets to a 20 percent shooting clip in the first half, while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and out-rebounded ASU 26-18.

The Yellow Jackets continued to dominate in the second half, never relinquishing a double-digit lead and led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter. For the game, Tech shot 39.3 percent (24-61) from the floor and 60.0 percent (18-30) from the charity stripe. Tech won the battle on the glass, 45-42. ASU was limited to a 23.8 percent shooting efficiency.

Elo All The Time
In just her second appearance as a Yellow Jacket, Elo Edeferioka finished with a team-best 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and a 6-of-7 clip from the free throw line. Additionally, Edeferioka recorded seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in 26 minutes of playing time. Edeferioka scored 11 of her 16 total points in the second half.

Count the Steals
Tech capped the game with 13 steals fueled by a career-high four from Antonia Peresson. Edeferioka, Zutorya Cook and Chanin Scott each added two steals apiece, while Francesca Pan, Imani Tilford and Katarina Vuckovic had one each.
