White Team, Weather Emerge As Winners In Spring Football Game

April 24, 2010

ATLANTA — Sophomore quarterback Tevin Washington accounted for four touchdowns to lead the White past the Gold, 27-7, in Georgia Tech’s weather-shortened spring football game.

After Washington rushed for a 5-yard touchdown to conclude the half — his third rushing TD of the first half — the second half was canceled as severe weather approached Tech’s Midtown campus.

“We still have a lot of things to work on to be sure, but I saw some positive things out there today,” head coach Paul Johnson said. “The best news is that no one got (seriously) injured.”

On Friday, Georgia Tech officials moved the kickoff from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. after receiving updated information from the National Weather Service. That one-hour difference turned out to be just enough time to get in one half of football before the heavy rain fell on Bobby Dodd Stadium.

The White team, comprised of the first-team offense and second-team defense, rolled up 274 yards of total offense — 152 by rushing and 122 via passing.

Washington completed 6-of-7 passes for 122 yards, including a perfect 70-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Hill that gave the White team a 21-7 lead. Hill finished the day with three receptions for 105 yards.

Anthony Allen rushed 15 times for 91 yards. Washington rushed 10 times for 35 yards and three touchdowns, and produced 157 yards of total offense.

The Gold team’s only score was a 13-yard touchdown run by sophomore Orwin Smith midway through the second quarter.

Redshirt freshman quarterback David Sims led the Gold in rushing with 34 yards on five carries. Senior Lucas Cox rushed five times for 21 yards.

Washington gave the White an early 7-0 lead on a 10-yard just 3:26 into the game. He ran for a second touchdown later in the quarter, this time from five yards out, to give the White a 14-0 advantage.

Smith’s touchdown pulled the Gold to within 14-7, but that’s when Washington found Hill streaking alone down the West sideline for a 70-yard TD connection. Washington’s final score came just as the first half ended from five yards out.
