Volleyball Places Four On All-ACC Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Monique Mead, junior Bailey Hunter and senior Mary Ashley Tippens were each named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball team it was announced this afternoon in voting conducted by the league’s coaches. In addition, Jennifer Percy was an All-Freshman team selection.

Tippins, a setter, earns her second straight All-ACC nod. After leading the ACC and finishing 20th in the nation in assists last year, the Atlanta native is fourth in the league this season with 10.87 assists a set. In Tech’s last match against North Carolina, Tippins passed Allie Niekamp for third place all-time in assists at Georgia Tech and now has 3,594 in her career. Tippins also averages 2.37 digs, 0.71 kills, 0.51 blocks and 0.16 service aces per set. She has 12 double-doubles this season and has come within a couple of kills of a triple double two different times.

Right-side hitter Mead, the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year, earns her second straight All-ACC citation. The Newnan, Ga., native currently leads the league and is 18th in the nation with 4.31 kills per set. She is the only player in the ACC currently averaging over four kills per set and her 5.07 points per set rank first and 13th, respectively. Mead also has 1.96 digs per set and is eighth in the league with 0.28 service aces a set. She has 101 total blocks on the season, an average of 0.88 a set, and is second on the team with five double-doubles. On Sept. 24 against Duke, Mead set a career high with 30 kills. It was Tech’s first 30-kill match since Talisa Kellogg had 35 against Virginia on Oct. 22, 2005 and just the 12th 30-kill match by an individual in school history. She has had at least 20 kills in a match eight times this year.

Hunter, a junior outside hitter, earns her first All-ACC award as she ranks second on the team with 3.08 kills per set and is hitting .262. The Hendersonville, N.C. native is also averaging 0.72 digs, 0.43 blocks and 0.24 service aces per set. Hunter has had double-figure kills in 20 matches this year, including a career-high 24 at Virginia Tech last month.

Percy earns a spot on the All-Freshman team after averaging 2.15 kills per set this season. The Mobile, Ala. native is also averaging 0.31 blocks and 0.41 digs while playing in 96 total sets. She has had eight double-figure kill performances, including a career-high 17 at Virginia in October.

The Yellow Jackets will now close out the regular season on Friday against Clemson at 6:30 p.m. in O’Keefe Gym. Its senior night as Jordan McCullers and Mary Ashley Tippins will be honored prior to the match. Live video, audio and stats are available at www.RamblinWreck.com.
