Two Jackets to Compete at ITA All-Americans

Oct. 3, 2016

TULSA, Okla. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis senior Carlos Benito and junior Christopher Eubanks head to Tulsa, Okla. to try their hands at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-Americans this week. Benito will compete in the singles qualifying and doubles main draw and Eubanks will join him later in the week for the doubles and singles main draws. This is Eubanks’ first tournament since returning from the US Open and American Intercollegiate Championships.

Singles Update – Benito will compete on Monday, Oct. 3 at noon. He will face Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Catalin Mateas from Duke. Benito entered the 2016 fall season with an ITA preseason ranking of No. 73, a career high. At the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, he reached the quarterfinals of the singles tournament. Eubanks kicks off his fall season in Tulsa after taking some much needed time off after his busy summer. Eubanks competed in the doubles and singles main draws at the BB&T Atlanta Open and earned a wild card spot at the U.S. Open, the first Jacket to do so while enrolled at Tech. In the preseason polls, Eubanks nabbed the No. 5 spot, a career high for the six-foot-seven All-American.

Doubles Update –Ranked No. 14 in the ITA preseason rankings, Benito and Eubanks will compete in the doubles main draw at ITA All-Americans. The pair boasted a 16-4 record in the 2015-16 season, ending with a five-match winning streak.

Head coach Kenny Thorne says – “We have Benito and Eubanks out in Tulsa this week. They will be facing the best competition in the nation right out of the gate. They earned the right to be there so we get to see where they are at this point in the fall. It always helps to get the first match under your belt so hopefully they can get off to a good start. It is the first opportunity this season for an individual national title so there is no need to hold back.”

The Tournament format – Qualifying first round will be held on Monday, Oct. 3, followed by the second and third rounds on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The singles main draw starts on Oct. 6 and the championship game will be held on Oct. 10. Doubles main draw kicks off on Oct. 6 as well.
