Three Track and Field Athletes to Compete at NCAA Indoor Championships

March 8, 2007

ATLANTA – Ashlee Kidd, Shantia Moss and Jerome Miller will be representing the Georgia Tech track and field teams at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend, March 9-10, in Fayetteville, Ark.

“Each year the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships is literally one of the best meets in the world, and this year will be no different,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “It will be the very elite athletes in the NCAA competing at a world-class facility. Both Ashlee Kidd and Shantia Moss have experience competing at the NCAA’s and in the Arkansas facility. Each has positioned themselves to accomplish some truly great things this weekend if they perform up to expectations.”

Kidd, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., set a new school record with her a personal-best and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.10 in the 400-meter dash. Kidd is currently ranked third in the nation with her time in the 400m. She had also provisionally qualified for the 200-meter dash but will not compete in that race. Kidd will begin her quest for a national title on Friday, beginning at 5:40 p.m. with the preliminary round of the 400m.

“Kidd has been one of the best and most consistent 400m runners in the NCAA over the last couple of years and enters the meet with the third best time this season,” said Drosky. “She is one of about five women who are capable of winning the championship. Amongst the top runners there is very little difference in physical ability and the race will be won and lost depending on tactics.”

Moss, a junior from Tamarac, Fla., has also automatically qualified for the championship meet, running a personal-best time of 8.03 in the 60-meter hurdles at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships. Moss is currently tied for the best time in the nation and looks to improve on her all-American performance at last years Indoor Championship, where she finished 10th in the 60m hurdles. Moss will begin her competition on Friday at 5:05 p.m. with the prelims of the 60m hurdles.

“Moss has been knocking on door of the top tier of hurdlers in the NCAA, and in setting the ACC Championships record of 8.03, she announced that she has arrived,” added Drosky. “This season, Shantia has been on a mission from day one and has been consistently at the top of her game week in and week out. She enters the meet with the best time in the nation, tied with one other athlete, and there are probably another two that also could win.”

Miller, a junior from Stafford, Va., is the lone men’s representative. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the high jump with a school- and personal-best mark of 7 feet, 2 ½ inches. Miller currently is tied for sixth in the nation with his mark in the high jump. The men’s high jump will get underway on Saturday at 4:45 p.m.

“I am very proud of Jerome for all he has accomplished during this indoor season,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “He has certainly earned his ticket to Fayetteville. Jerome is a great competitor and a great leader on this team. I have no doubt that he will bring his A-game to this competition.”
