Tech Track Sits In Eighth, Ninth, After Day Two Of ACC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After day two of competition at the ACC Championships on the campus of the University of Virginia, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams sit in ninth and eighth place respectively.

The Yellow Jacket women tallied their 12 points behind a fourth and fifth place long jump finish and a sixth place heptathlon finish. Jasmine Kent and Julienne McKee took fourth and fifth respectively in the long jump for Tech. Kent finished with a personal best jump of 6.04m (19-9.75) while McKee finished just behind her with a distance of 6.02m (19-9), the second time she has hit that mark this season.

Monique Pate finished the heptathlon in sixth place after two days of competition. Pate’s sixth place finish was fueled by a second place, 11.39m (37-4.5) finish in the shot put event. Pate tallied 4,532 points at the end of the two day competition.

On the men’s side of things, a fourth place finish in the pole vault by Nikita Kirillov, coupled with sixth and seventh place finishes by Omar Morrison and Jonathan Gardner in the long jump gave the Jackets 10 points after two days of competition.

Kirillov leaped to a height of 5.10m (16-8.75) in the pole vault for the fourth place finish. In the long jump, Morrison launched himself 7.26m (23-10) for sixth place while Gardner flew a personal record distance of 7.16m (23-6) for seventh place.

On the track, Stephanie Kalu qualified for the 100m dash finals in just her first ACC Outdoor Championship with a seventh place 11.77 second preliminary time. Melanie Akwule also qualified for the women in the 100m hurdles finishing the preliminary round in sixth place with a time of 13.53. Like Kalu, Jasmine Isley also took seventh in the prelims with a time of 1:01.39 in the 400m hurdles.

Antonio McKay will appear in the 400m dash finals tomorrow after his sixth place, 47.48 second finish in the qualifying rounds. He will be joined by Rick Scheff who raced out to a personal best time of 1:49.86.

The Virginia Tech men remain in the lead after two days of competition with 82 points, ahead of Florida State’s 52 and Virginia’s 40. On the women’s side, Duke has accumulated 55 points and sits in first place. Virginia Tech is in second with 39, ahead of Clemson with 37, Virginia with 35, and Florida State with 34.

With the threat of impending weather in the area, the meet will be moved up two hours tomorrow, on the final day of competition. The field events will now begin at 10 a.m. while the track events will run starting at 11:30 a.m.
