Tech Track and Field to Run in Sprint Invitational

ATLANTA (Jan. 26) – Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams return to action Saturday at the Sprint Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., hosted by East Tennessee State.

“This is the first time we are participating in the meet in Johnson City in a few years,” said head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale. “It is always a very competitive meet on an oversized track and that is what we need to continue to get better. We had some solid performances last week and need to continue to improve to start reaching NCAA qualifying times.”

Sophomore Bryan Swarn (Englewood, Colo.) placed second in the 400 meters in an indoor career-best time of 47.32 seconds to lead the way for the men’s team. Freshman Brendon Mahoney (Cumming, Ga.) was second in the 800 meters in a time of 1:51.05, while the distance medley relay team was second in 10:00.77 and the 4×400 relay team was also second in a time of 3:11.07.

Senior Judy Johnson (Snellville, Ga.) was third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:31.03, while junior Sara Pardue (Aurora, Colo.) continued her strong indoor season with a third in the 800 meters in 2:10.72. Senior Ayana Grant (Oakland, Calif.) was third in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.48 seconds, while freshman Keith Schuler (Florence, Ky.) was third in the high jump with a leap of 6-9.75. Senior Malcolm Leason (Wilmington, Del.) was third in the triple jump with his first jump of the year over 50 feet at 50-8.

“Our student-athletes continue to improve their times and that is what we are striving for,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “Johnson, Pardue and Grant continue to get better each week and work toward NCAA qualifying times. Mahoney is performing like we think he is capable of and has dealt with the tactics of the indoor racing very well for a freshman.”
