Tech Golfers Finish Sixth at Waikoloa Intercollegiate

WAIKOLOA, HAWAI’I – Led by a pair of sub-par final rounds by senior Troy Matteson and sophomore Nicholas Thompson, the Georgia Tech golf team finished sixth with a 2-under-par closing round at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament was contested at both the par-72, 7,074-yard Kings and par-70, 6,566-yard Beach Courses in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.

The Yellow Jackets finished with a pair of sub-par rounds on the King’s course, including the 2-under-par 286 on Friday to close the tournament with a 54-hole total of 2-under-par, 288-280-286=851. That score put Tech 15 shots off the pace of team champion UCLA, which finished at 20-under-par, 283-271-282=836.

Tech’s individuals in the field were led by Matteson and Thompson, who carded rounds of 69 and 70 respectively in the final round to finish as part of a five-way tie for 11th place at 3-under-par. Matteson shot a 3-over-par 73 on the opening day and them rallied with a pair of 69s in the final two rounds to finish at 73-69-69=211 in the event. Thompson also carded a pair of sub-par rounds on the final two days of play, finishing 6-under-par over the final 36 holes and at 74-67-70=211 for the tournament. The duo finished nine shots back of individual champion Adam Meyer of TCU, who completed play at 12-under-par, 67-68-67=202.

The other Jacket individuals in the field included sophomore Chan Wongluekiet, who was part of a six-way tie for 48th place at 3-over-par, 70-73-74=217 and rookie Thomas Jordan, who finished tied with eight other players in 80th place at 9-over-par, 71-76-76=223. The final member of the Tech contingent was senior Adam Cranford, who was part of a three-way tie for 103rd place at 84-71-73=228.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action next weekend when they travel to Rio Mar, Puerto Rico to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club on Feb. 23-25. Tech is the defending team champion in the event and Matteson is the reigning medalist.
