Tech Golfers 2-Under, But Far Back at Amer Ari Invitational

Feb. 6, 2014

Waikoloa Village, Hawai’i – Ollie Schniederjans fired a 3-under-par 69 Thursday, and Georgia Tech shot a 2-under-par 286 as a team and is in a tie for 15th place after the opening round of the Amer Ari Invitational.

Anders Albertson and Vincent Whaley each shot even-par 72 for the No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets, who find themselves 15 strokes behind the lead. Bo Andrews added a 73 to complete Tech’s scoring.

“Obviously this was not the way we would have preferred to start our spring,” said head coach Bruce Heppler, whose team won twice and finished second twice in four fall tournaments. “There was no wind for the first 16 holes today, and we just couldn’t score when we had chances. We’re looking forward to a better day tomorrow.”

Schniederjans began his round with three birdies in his first five holes and posted his 12th sub-par round out of 16 this year. The junior from Powder Springs, Ga., ranked No. 2 nationally, is five shots off the lead of Oregon’s Thomas Lim, who shot 64 and is one stroke clear of Southern California’s Rico Hoey.

Third-ranked Oklahoma State shot 17-under-par 271 and has a one-shot lead over TCU (-16). No. 24 Southern California (-15) is in third place, followed by No. 16 Texas and No. 27 Auburn (-14 each), Oregon (-12) and Texas Tech (-10). Nine of the 20 teams in the field are ranked among the nation’s top 30 teams in Division I.

Sixty-two of the 118 individuals in the field broke par Thursday.

Friday’s second round begins with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time.
