Tech Doubles Pair Earns Upset Win on Day Two

Nov. 6, 2010

DURHAM, N.C. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis doubles pair of Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn earned an upset win, 9-7, over Duke’s ninth-ranked team of Monica Gorny and Mary Clayton at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the Duke campus Saturday.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the way we played today,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We came out of the blocks well and competed hard all day. We finished strong on the big points when we needed to. I thought we really kept our composure and showed a lot of mental toughness today. It was a big improvement over yesterday. The match that Lynn [Blau] and Elizabeth [Kilborn] played was the best I’ve seen them play in doubles.

“Our goal for tomorrow is to come out and finish strong. We’re really going to be challenged, especially playing a team as good as UNC at home. I think our team is fired up and excited to go out and play,” Shelton added.

Kilborn maintained her clean sheet with a singles win over Texas A&M’s Stephanie Davidson, 6-4, 7-6(4), during the afternoon session at UNC’s Cone-Kanfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.

In addition to the win over the Blue Devils, Blau teamed with Christina Ngo to defeat Maryland’s Jordaan Sanford and Burce Kurkan, 8-2. Blau also registered a singles victory over Texas A&M’s Lauren Santacroce, 6-3, 6-4.

Tech’s 29th-ranked doubles team of Caroline Lilley and Sasha Krupina fell to Duke’s 19th ranked side of Nadine Fahoum and Ella Nze, but rebounded to complete the doubles sweep of the Terrapins with an 8-1 win over UM’s Julia Huschke and Ana Belzunce.

Rounding out Tech’s singles action were wins by Ngo, 6-2, 6-2, over Morgan Frank, Lilley ground out a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) win over Christi Liles, and Muriel Wacker made quick work of the Aggies’ Sheri Oliver, 6-2, 6-0.
