Tech Completes Sweep of Costa Rican Teams With 75-58 Victory Over National Squad

San Jose, Costa Rica – Janie Mitchell recorded a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and Chioma Nnamaka added 15 points as Georgia Tech finished its international trip undefeated with a 75-58 victory over the Costa Rican National Team Monday evening at the National Gym in the capitol city of San Jose.

Mitchell, a freshman from Jackson, Miss., recorded her fourth double-figure scoring game of the trip with a season-high 20 points against the top players from the country. She also recorded three steals, two assists and a block while committing just one turnover. A native of Uppsala, Sweden, freshman Nnamaka went 6-for-10 from the field while pulling down four rebounds and dishing out two assists, blocking a shot and stealing a pass.

Freshman point guard Jill Ingram led the team with six assists and four steals while converting on 4-of-5 from the field and committing no turnovers against the National Team.

The Yellow Jackets had 31 bench points in the contests, as compared to the National Team’s 16, while outscoring the Costa Rican team 36-24 in the paint.

After falling behind by as much as 20 points late in the second quarter, the National Team pulled within three with 8:01 remaining in the fourth quarter and again with 5:24 on the clock, but Chioma Nnamaka converted on a free throw and Jessica Williams converted on a three-point play to put the game out of reach. Over the last five minutes of the contest, the Jackets converted on 4-of-6 from the field and all three attempts from the charity stripe, giving Tech a final score of 75-58.

With the win, the Jackets finished 4-0 on their international trip.

Georgia Tech will return to Atlanta Tuesday evening and begin practice for the 2004-05 season, which begins Nov. 2 with an exhibition game against the Premier Players at 7 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
