TOURNAMENT NOTES, QUARTERFINAL 1

§ Georgia Tech improved to 6-22 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament. This was the Yellow Jackets’ third consecutive quarterfinal victory; that’s the first time that’s happened in school history.
§ The Yellow Jackets beat the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament for the first time in six tries. Georgia Tech has 12 all-time tournament victories, and UNC has 55, the most in conference history.
§ From 2000 to 2011, teams were 0-7 in tournament games when failing to block a shot. This year, they’re 2-0. Georgia Tech did it Friday, and Wake Forest also won without blocking a shot in beating Virginia Tech 80-74 in the first round Thursday.
§ After a sloppy first half in which the teams combined to commit 26 turnovers, they had just nine combined in the second half.
§ Georgia Tech guard Ty Marshall scored 21 points, her sixth 20-point game of the season and the 12th time she led the Yellow Jackets in scoring.
§ North Carolina’s Krista Gross had 10 rebounds, her first double-figure rebound game since Jan. 22 against N.C. State.
§ Georgia Tech and UNC met once in the regular season, with a similar result. Georgia Tech won 56-54 in Chapel Hill on Feb. 12.
§ The Yellow Jackets’ bench outscored UNC’s 14-5.
§ North Carolina (20-11) finished 9-7 in the ACC regular season. Since the NCAA Tournament’s expansion to 64 teams in 1994, only one team with a winning record in regular-season ACC play has been excluded from the field. That was the 1995 Clemson team, which went 9-7.
§ The only other two ACC teams above .500 in league play and uninvited to the tournament are the 1986 Duke team (9-5), which did not make the 40-team field in 1986; and the 1982 UNC squad, which didn’t make the inaugural NCAA championship in 1982. The Tar Heels were 10-2 in regular-season league play, but the postseason field was only 32 deep at that point.

§ Over 12,000 students are attending the first two days of the tournament: 5,500 students on Thursday, Elementary School day, and 6,600 on Friday, Middle School day.
§ There are 100 different schools coming that represent 12 different school districts- Forsyth, Guilford, Lee, Lexington, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Surry, Thomasville, Yadkin, Chatham and Davie. Private schools and home school are in attendance as well.
§ Of the 12,100 students in attendance, 6,230 of them are from Guilford County.
