Six Jackets In Round of 32 at USTA/ITA Tennis Regional

Gainesville, Fla. – All-American Guillermo Gomez and five other Georgia Tech players won round of 64 matches Friday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional tennis event on the campus of the University of Florida, and two of the Yellow Jackets’ four doubles teams won twice Friday and made it to the quarterfinals of the event.

Among the Tech players who had first-round byes Thursday, top-seeded Gomez defeated Florida’s Billy Federhofer, Juan Spir defeated Florida A&M’s Levarn Clark and 5th-seeded Kevin King downed Florida’s Michael Alford, all in straight sets. Magin Ortiga rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Didrik Berg of Stetson.

Dusan Miljevic and Ryan Smith, both of whom played and won in the round of 128, each won again Friday in straight sets. Miljevic defeated Santiago Nieto of Miami, while Smith downed Will Oliver of Georgia.

All six players have round of 32 matches Saturday morning, and the winners will advance to play in the round of 16 Saturday afternoon. Miguel Muguruza, Dean O’Brien and 8th-seeded Eliot Potvin all fell Friday in the round of 64 and have consolation matches set for Saturday.

In the doubles draw, King and Spir, the third seed, eased past Michael Alford and Andrew Butz of Florida first, then routed Marc Abdelnour/Ervin Garabovic, Florida Atlantic, 8-1, to reach the quarters. Potvin and Smith, the 6th seed, beat Didrik Berg and Cesare Gallo, Stetson, 9-8, in their first match, then had an easier time of it against Chim Gabriel of Takura Happy, Florida A&M, 8-3. Gomez and O’Brien won their round of 32 match against Sekou Bangoura and Bob van Overbeek of Florida, but were eliminated, 9-8, by Andres Bucaro and Anderson Reed of Florida State.

Quarterfinal matches involving King/Spir and Potvin/Smith will take place Saturday afternoon following singles play.

The singles and doubles champions from each of the 12 the NCAA Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y. Columbia University will serve as the tournament host.
