Seven Yellow Jackets to Compete at NCAA Championships

ATLANTA – Four men and three women will represent Georgia Tech at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 11-14 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The Yellow Jackets will compete in five different events during the four-day meet.

The competition is scheduled to begin Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the men’s javelin. Running events will commence with the women’s 4×100-meter relay at 4:30 p.m. CT.

Junior Kimery Hern will lead off for the Yellow Jackets when she competes in the women’s hammer throw prelims Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. CT. Hern enters the event ranked 26th in the nation with a school-record mark of 197 feet, 11 inches.

Sophomore Steve Marcelle and Junior Andy Powlen will begin their quest for an NCAA Championship crown in the men’s shot put prelims Thursday at 4:15 p.m. CT. Marcelle enters the meet ranked 15th with a season-best throw of 61 feet, 6 ¾ inches. Powlen’s personal-best mark of 60 feet, 8 ½ inches earned him a national ranking of 21st.

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, senior Shantia Moss will aim for second career All-American honor beginning Thursday at 4:30 p.m. CT. Moss has registered a career-best time of 13.01 in the hurdles event to rank ninth in the nation.

Junior Jacqua Williams will make her second straight appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 200-meter dash beginning Thursday at 5:10 p.m. CT. Williams has a season-best time of 23.49 in the 200m to rank 23rd.

The men’s other two qualifiers, senior James Lemons II and sophomore Alphonso Jordan will begin competition in the men’s triple jump Friday at 4:15 p.m. CT. Lemons holds the ninth-best mark in the nation of 53 feet, 6 ½ inches. Jordan ranks 12th in the nation in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 52 feet, 9 ½ inches.
