No. 8 Tech Opens ITA Qualifier Against No. 25 TCU

Jan. 30, 2009

ATLANTA – The back-to-back ITA National Team Indoor Champion Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will begin its quest for three straight when it hosts the ITA National Indoor Qualifier this weekend. The eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets (1-1) will face No. 25 TCU (1-1) Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2:30 p.m., at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Jackets, who have won seven straight home matches dating back to last season, own a 1-0 record against the Horned Frogs, winning the only meeting, 5-4, in Atlanta on March 14, 1999.

On Sunday, Tech will either face No. 20 Florida State or No. 21 Arizona State. The Seminoles are 16-8 all-time against their Atlantic Coast Conference foe, but the Jackets have won six of the last seven meetings. Tech and Arizona State have never met.

The winners of Saturday’s matches will play at 2:30 p.m., Sunday with the consolation match scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Admission is free to the general public. Live stats for both Georgia Tech matches will be available on ramblinwreck.com.

This is the first year of the “regional” format for the ITA Indoor Championships with 15 school sites playing host to first and second rounds with the winners, plus Wisconsin, advancing to the round of 16 in Madison, Wis., from Feb. 13-16. In the past, 16 teams were invited to Wisconsin, where they played a minimum of three matches.

Parking for Saturday’s tennis matches will be available in Peters Parking Deck at the corner of Fowler and Fourth Streets before 10:00 a.m. and after 1:00 p.m. This lot is also utilized for basketball parking and will be a pay lot from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. If Peters Deck is full, additional parking is available in the W-21 lot at the corner of Ferst Drive and State Street.

Parking areas in the vicinity of the basketball arena and the tennis center, including Fowler Street, 8th Street, the AMC lots, and the O’Keefe lot will be available for basketball permit holders only until approximately 2:30 p.m. Cars left in these areas will be subject to ticketing and/or towing.
