No. 3 Yellow Jacket Tennis Stops No. 51 Denver, 6-1

ATLANTA – Senior Alison Silverio, ranked 41st in the nation in singles play, shut out Marisa Mechem, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles as No. 3 Georgia Tech (8-2) defeated No. 51 Denver (5-4), 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Silverio, teaming with Tarryn Rudman, also recorded a doubles win on the day, defeating Julia Bauregger and Kyla Iwinski, 8-4, at the No. 2 doubles position.

Twenty-seventh ranked Christy Striplin dropped just one game against Bauregger at the third singles line to clinch the match for the Jackets, 6-1, 6-0, after No. 74 Amanda McDowell posted a solid 6-3, 6-1 win over Denver’s Rachel Sackmaster at the No. 5 singles slot.

No. 10 Kristi Miller pushed the score to 5-0 in Tech’s favor with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Denver’s Annette Aksdal before 50th-ranked Whitney McCray pulled out a third-set tiebreaker win over Kyla Iwinski at the No. 6 singles position to win, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6.

Earlier in the day, Miller and McCray, ranked 18th in the nation in doubles, defeated Denver’s tandem of Ute Schnoy and Rachel Sackmaster, 8-3, before an 8-4 victory by rookies Amanda Craddock and Kirsten Flower clinched the doubles point for the Jackets at the No. 3 position.

The Pioneers’ lone win came at the end of the match when Schnoy battled for a third-set tiebreaker win over Tech’s 18th-ranked Flower, 0-6, 7-5, 7-6.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in a match that is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Livestats for the match will be available at www.georgiadogs.com.
