Atlanta – Head Coach Bryan Shelton and the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team hosted Senior Day on Sunday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center and the 25th-ranked Yellow Jackets (12-10, 6-5 ACC) defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-17, 0-11 ACC) 7-0 to put a successful home cap on the careers of Lynn Blau, Caroline Lilley, Viet Ha Ngo and Jillian O’Neill.
All four seniors won their singles matches today.
It was also the final home match of the Bill Moore Tennis Center. A new tennis center will begin construction in early summer.
“I was happy for all the girls, but especially for the seniors today,” Shelton said. “To close out our run in this facility with a win against Wake, it is very special. I’m happy all the girls had success out there today.”
For the 14th time this season and the third straight match, Georgia Tech took a 1-0 lead into singles play after winning the doubles point.
Viet Ha Ngo and Muriel Wacker earned their team-best 12th doubles win of the dual season and improved to 8-3 in ACC play with a decisive 8-1 victory over Wake Forest’s Brigita Bercyte and Catherine Roach on court three. The Demon Deacons evened the doubles score with an 8-4 win by Rebecca Siegler and Karen Forman over Tech’s Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn on court two.
For the second straight day, the Yellow Jackets’ 10th-ranked team of Alex Anghelescu and Jillian O’Neill clinched the doubles point for third straight match with an 8-3 win over the Demon Deacons’ Kayla Duncan and Ryann Cutillo on court one.
Blau cruised past Wake Forest’s Bercyte 6-0, 6-0 on court five for her third straight win and her eighth win in her last 10 matches. Ngo became the second senior on Senior Day to work quickly and dismiss an opponent 6-0, 6-0 as she topped the Deacons’ Catherine Roach on court six.
For the second straight day, Caroline Lilley clinched the Yellow Jacket victory with a win on court two. Today, she dispatched Wake Forest’s Ryann Cutillo 6-1, 6-2 for her third straight win and improved to 5-1 at the second spot of the lineup this year.
O’Neill, ranked No. 16 nationally, had to battle for a 7-6, 6-4 win over Wake’s No. 68 Kayla Duncan on court one, her ninth win over a ranked opponent this season. After dropping the first set 7-5 to Rebecca Siegler, Elizabeth Kilborn rallied for a 7-5 second set win and won a third-set tiebreak 10-6 to put the Yellow Jackets up 6-0.
“I thought it was great that all four seniors could be out there and they all won,” Shelton said. “They competed well and a couple didn’t lose a game. Jillian didn’t have her best stuff today, but it’s fun to see her win when she doesn’t have her best stuff because she’s come a long way. I’m really proud of all four of them because they are doing great in school and great on the court as well.”
Anghelescu lost a tough first set 6-1, but put together a comeback of her own to win the second set 7-5 and won her third-set tiebreak 10-8.
The Yellow Jackets now wait to find out there first round opponent at the ACC Championships which begin Thursday at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
“I’m looking forward to finding out where we finish and to see who we play in the first round,” Shelton said. “The ACC Championship is always exciting. We’ve had a lot of success in Cary, and when you walk into the facility you just feel good having won there four times. I’m excited about that. We know if we can get some momentum going and get through that first match, we’re a very dangerous team. I feel like we can get some momentum going, but we have to get through the first one first.”
