Chapel Hill, N.C. – Guillermo Gomez and Magin Ortiga captured the only points for Georgia Tech by winning their singles matches Sunday, and the 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets suffered their second straight loss Sunday in a 5-2 decision to North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Stadium.

Tech fell to 15-5 overall in dual matches this spring, and 6-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels improved to 14-4 and 5-2, taking over third place in the conference standings.

“It was a disappointing day for our team,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “The positives were that Magin followed his win Saturday with another today. He is playing well and gaining confidence. Guillermo also won a tough match today. UNC played well at home and we failed to match them.”

The Tar Heels saddled Tech with their first doubles loss in seven matches to get on top. Kevin King and Juan Spir fell to 17th-ranked Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy, 8-3, at No. 1, and UNC clinched the match at No. 3 with Andrew Crone and Jose Hernandez downing Gomez and Dean O’Brien, 8-4.

They extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 4 and 2 singles in straight sets. Brennan Boyajian, ranked No. 108 nationally, defeated Miguel Muguruza, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4, and 78th-ranked Hernandez turned back No. 62 Kevin King, 6-1, 6-3.

Tech freshman Magin Ortiga got the Jackets’ first point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Crone at No. 5, then UNC clinched the match when Zach Hunter defeated O’Brien in straight sets at No. 6, 6-2, 6-4.

Stefan Hardy gave the Tar Heels their fifth point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Eliot Potvin at No. 3, and Tech All-American Guillermo Gomez, ranked No. 4 in the nation, closed out the match with a three-set win over No. 51 Clay Donato at No. 1, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.

Tech returns to action Friday when it hosts top-ranked Virginia, and Saturday when it hosts Virginia Tech, at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in the Yellow Jackets’ final home matches of the season.
