ATLANTA – Off to its best start in school history, the 18th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (26-5) will open Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend in Blacksburg, Va., for a three-game series with Virginia Tech (22-8). The Jackets and Hokies will play two games on Saturday beginning at Noon and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Rambling Wreck hold a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series. The Hokies took two of three games last season in Atlanta and the two teams split the season series in Blacksburg in 2005, losing the third game due to inclement weather.
The ACC series will feature the conference’s top hitter and top pitcher. The Jackets’ Caitlin Lever leads the league in batting average (.551), slugging percentage (.898) and on base percentage (.602). She also leads the league with 38 runs scored and 54 hits, and has matched a career-high 10 doubles and has 38 runs batted in.
The Hokies feature Angela Tincher, one of the best pitcher’s in the nation. Tincher (16-3) leads the ACC with 271 strikeouts in 126.0 innings pitched, and carries a conference low 0.44 earned run average.
Leading the Jackets in the circle is sophomore Tiffany Johnson and junior Whitney Humphreys. Johnson leads the team with a 1.74 ERA and has 103 strikeouts in 76.1 innings pitched, while Humphreys is second in the ACC with 11 wins and has a 2.21 ERA.
