March 7, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech diamond standouts Aileen Morales and Matt Wieters and golf star Chan Song were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, March 7, 2005.

Morales, a freshman from Columbus, Ga., led the 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 7-1 record last week and a third-place finish at the Buzz Classic Softball Tournament. The Tech freshman earned all-tournament honors for her performance on the weekend. Morales, a native of Columbus, Ga., hit .417 for the week, drove in a team-high six runs, smacked her first collegiate home run against Ohio State in the semifinals of the Buzz Classic and stole a tournament best five bases. The second baseman began the week with a 1-for-4 performance in a 3-0 win over UAB as she drove in two runs for the Jackets. At the Buzz, Morales drove in the game-tying run against Purdue with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Tech overcome a 1-0 deficit with two outs in the final inning to triumph over the Boilermakers, 2-1. On Saturday, Morales continued her hot bat going 3-for-5, with one RBI and one stolen base. In the quarterfinals of the Buzz, Morales went 3-for-3, scoring two runs, driving in one and tallying a double in an 11-3 win over Florida A&M. Against the Buckeyes, Morales led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to left field and singled in the seventh inning to finish the game 2-for-4, with one RBI.

Song, a senior from Orlando, Fla., led Georgia Tech to its first victory of the 2004-05 school year at the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, PR. The third-ranked Yellow Jackets scored a four-shot victory over Florida and top-ranked Oklahoma State. Song carded three subpar rounds (68-71-71) and tied for fourth place individually at 6-under-par 210. It was Song’s fifth top-20 finish in six events this year, and second finish in the top 10.

Wieters, a freshman from Goose Creek, S.C., went 13-for-17 (.765) with a home run and nine RBI to lead Georgia Tech to a perfect 4-0 record against Georgia Southern and Duke last week. The switch hitter had a slugging percentage of 1.059 and posted an .800 on base percentage. He had two doubles, walked three times and added two sacrifice bunts. After a 1-for-3 performance in a midweek 9-1 win over Georgia Southern, Wieters went 12-for-14 in Tech’s three game sweep at Duke. In the series finale on Sunday, he went a perfect 5-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBI. Wieters helped Tech extend its ACC regular season win streak to 19 games, two games shy of the ACC record. Additionally, Wieters earned the win on Tuesday against Georgia Southern by working 3.2 innings of shutout relief.
