Montgomery Named to All-ACC Academic Team

March 6, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. –

Georgia Tech’s Alex Montgomery highlights the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Women’s Basketball Team, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford today. Eight of the league’s schools are represented on this year’s academic squad, while five selections are repeat recipients.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Virginia Tech led all schools with three honorees on the academic team, while WakeForest notched two on the team. Hokie junior Brittany Cook, who recorded a 2007-08 league-high mark of 36 points against Miami on Feb. 11, finished the regular season as the ACC’s leading scorer, averaging 18.2 points per game.

Four freshmen were named to this year’s academic team, including Montgmery, BostonCollege’s Carolyn Swords, Miami’s Epiphany Woodson and WakeForest’s Camille Collier. Each of the newcomers have made considerable athletic and academic contributions to their respective teams this season as the Eagles’ Swords and Yellow Jackets’ Montgomery were each league Rookie of the Week honorees.

Five of the recipients earn the accolade for the second consecutive year, while Langhorne is the only three-year honoree in the awards’ history.

The 31st annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament got underway at the Greensboro Coliseum Thursday, March 6 and will conclude on Sunday, March 9 with the championship contest slated for 1 p.m. ET.
