BISHOP, Ga. – At their first meet of the season the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in third and fourth place in their respective races. The men were paced by Patrick Barron who had the highest finish by any Jacket runner, taking seventh with a time of 25:29.

“We saw some solid performances for our first meet of the season,” said Head Coach Alan Drosky. “The times for both the men and women compare favorably to our opening meet last year on the same course.”

The Tech women were led by Felicity Brower who took 15th place overall, coming across the finish line in 18:49.33. She was followed by freshman Megan Breitbach who finished 21st overall in her first collegiate race, crossing the line in 18:59.81.

After Brower and Breitbach were Sarah Anderson (37th place, 19:35.04), Lauren Young (40th place, 19:42.82), Maureen McMeekin (41st place, 19:49.50), Mary Kownack (44th, 20:07.64), Jamie VanTassell (46th place, 20:12.20), Elena Hubbard (48th place, 20:29.43), and Hayley Drosky (53rd place, 20:56.67).

“Some of the women ran a little too aggressively early in the race but overall they were pretty consistent,” continued Drosky. “Felicity Brower and Megan Breitbach were solid for us up front.

The women’s team averaged a time of 19:23.30; totaling 103 points on the day.

Barron led the Tech men in the race and was followed closely by Phillip O’Brien who came across in 12th place with a time of 25:45 and D.J. McMillan who finished 16th in a time of 25:52.

Rounding out the rest of the pack for the Jackets were Mark Mendrek-Laske (17th place, 25:58), Nick McNutt (19th place, 26:09), Shawn Roberts (20th place, 26:12, Niall Longobardi (22nd place, 26:28), Eric Powers (31st place, 26:37), Kevin Arends (38th place, 26:51), Obiando Igwe (42nd place, 27:02.44), Nathan Tew (43rd place, 27:02.58) and Doug Black (46th place, 27:09.79).

“The men ran a good tactical race and moved up well throughout the race,” said Drosky. “We’ll make some adjustments for our next meet to be a little closer to the front. Patrick Barron and Philip O’Brien ran particularly strong races.”

The men’s team averaged 25:16.24; totaling 70 points on the day.

Georgia swept the meet, taking first on both the men’s (24 points) and women’s sides (27 points).
