Men Seventh, Women Eighth at 2010 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Georgia Tech men’s track & field team finished seventh overall, while the women’s team placed eighth, as the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships wrapped up this afternoon at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech.

The Jackets were led on the day by seniors Steve Marcelle and Alphonso Jordan, who took first place in the shot put and the triple jump, respectively.

Marcelle took the shot put with a 61′ 11″ mark in the finals. The mark, which was an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark, earned Marcelle the ACC shot put gold medal for the third consecutive year.

Jordan captured the triple jump with a mark of 53′ 4¼”, which is a new indoor school record in the event, breaking the previous mark of 52-11.00 that was set by Rich Thompson in 1990. The mark also automatically qualified Jordan for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Jordan also earned All-ACC honors in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second overall with a time of 7.85 in the finals. The mark was also an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark, a career-best and the second-best mark in indoor school history.

In other action for the men on the day, junior Antonio McKay Jr. finished fifth overall after crossing the finish line in 48.05. Meanwhile, in the 4×400 relay, the Georgia Tech team of Subbu Sivanesan, Thomas Oatts III, Shawn Roberts and McKay Jr. finished seventh overall with a time of 3:16.44

For the women, junior Jenae Anderson finished eighth overall with a time of 24.54. In the 400-meter dash, senior Tiffany Grant finished sixth overall after crossing the finish line in 54.75, while freshman Kellie Christian placed eighth in 55.52. In the final individual event for the Jackets, sophomore Annie Martin placed eighth overall in 4:52.19.

The final event of the Championships for the women’s team was the 4×400 relay, as the team of Jasmine Isley, Tiffany Grant, Anderson and Christian finished fifth overall with a time of 3:42.81.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, March 6 at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier.
