July 23, 2016

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland – Georgia Tech track & field freshman Bria Matthews placed fifth in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump this week at the World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

“This was a great meet with tough competition,” said Matthews following her final jump. “I am blessed to have made it this far.”

The Georgia native competed in the qualifying round of the long jump on Wednesday morning. She qualified for the final with a mark of 6.13 meters on her third attempt by being among the top 12 marks. In the final on Friday afternoon, she finished with a mark of 6.24 meters for her fifth place finish.

Matthews jumped to a mark of 13.34 meters in the qualifying round of the triple jump on Friday morning to move on to the finals. Saturday morning she jumped to a mark of 13.49 on her fourth jump of the finals to nab the fourth place spot.

This performance caps off an impressive freshman campaign for Matthews. She set the all-time Georgia Tech record for both indoor and outdoor long jump. She also set the all-time Georgia Tech outdoor record for the triple jump. She won both the long and triple jump at the ACC Indoor Championships in March. The jumper was named ACC Freshman of the Year following her performance in the indoor season.

Matthews won the long jump and the triple jump at the USATF Junior Nationals in Clovis, Calif. in June. She also placed 12th in the finals for the triple jump at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials.
