Justin Thomas, Paul Davis Honored By ACC

Sept. 22, 2014

THE FLATS – As undefeated Georgia Tech enters its open week, the ACC honored quarterback Justin Thomas and linebacker Paul Davis on Monday among the conference’s Player of the Week selections.

Thomas, who engineered game-tying and game-winning drives in the final three minutes of Saturday’s 27-24 victory at Virginia Tech, was honored as the ACC’s Offensive Back of the Week, while Davis, who returned an interception for a touchdown, was named the Linebacker of the Week.

A sophomore quarterback from Prattville, Ala., Thomas rushed for a career-high 165 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown, becoming the first Georgia Tech quarterback since 2011 to post back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. He is averaging a team-leading 110.8 rushing yards per game, which is second-most by any FBS quarterback. Thomas also completed 7-of-18 passes for 125 yards and the game-tying touchdown pass to DeAndre Smelter with 2:03 left in the VT win.

Davis recorded a career-high nine tackles and his first career interception return for a touchdown. With the Yellow Jackets trailing 16-10, Davis picked off a Virginia Tech pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown. It marked the second interception return for a TD this season by the Georgia Tech defense, which has seen all seven of its takeaways through the first four games result in a score. A native of Cairo, Ga., the sophomore linebacker’s previous high was seven tackles vs. Georgia Southern.

Tech (4-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC) returns to action Saturday, October 4 at Bobby Dodd Stadium with a marquee matchup under the lights versus Miami. The annual Whiteout game begins at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
