Jackets Win Nine Matches on First Day of Tournament Play

ATLANTA – The No. 8 Georgia Tech women’s team combined to win nine matches Friday on the first day of competition at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic.

Amanda McDowell and Irina Falconi, playing at the Freeman Memorial in Las Vegas, Nev., each won a pair of singles matches to reach Saturday’s quarterfinals. McDowell, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, defeated Jelena Durisic of UNC, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round and earned a default victory over Arizona State’s Nadia Abdala in the second round. Falconi, the No. 5 seed, opened the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Leyla Entekhabi of USC and knocked off Baylor’s Lenka Broosova, 7-6, 7-5, in the second round.

After losing her opening round match, Sasha Krupina picked up a singles win in the consolation draw over Oregon’s Carmen Seremeta, 7-6, 6-2.

In doubles at the Freeman Memorial, McDowell and Falconi earned a first round win over UCLA’s Ashley Joelson and Carling Seguso, 8-5.

At the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Noelle Hickey opened the day with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over UCLA’s Maya Johannson. Lynn Blau and Hillary Davis each dropped their opening round singles matches but came back with consolation round victories. Blau defeated Zuzana Chmelarova of Baylor, 7-6, 7-5 and Davis beat Stanford’s Jen Yen, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday at both the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Results will be posted at the conclusion of the day’s competition on ramblinwreck.com, Georgia Tech’s official athletic website.
